• Once upon a time, there was a bridge. And beneath that bridge, there lived a troll. (옛날 옛적에 다리가 하나 있었습니다. 그리고 그 다리 아래에는 트롤이 살고 있었죠.)
• The troll would sit in the mud, listening, waiting, hoping for someone to cross the bridge. (트롤은 진흙 속에 앉아 누군가 다리를 건너오기를 듣고, 기다리고, 바라고 있었습니다.)
• “Who seeks to reach the grassy ridge? Who dares to walk across my bridge?” ("누가 이 풀이 우거진 언덕으로 가려 하느냐? 누가 감히 내 다리를 건너려 하느냐?")
• A little goat stood there, quivering. “It’s only me,” said the goat. “A billy goat. My last name’s Gruff.” (작은 염소 한 마리가 벌벌 떨며 서 있었습니다. "저예요," 염소가 말했습니다. "이름은 그러프이고 아기 염소죠.")
• “On goat I’ll dine, on goat I’ll sup. You little goat, I’ll eat you up!” ("염소로 만찬을 즐기고 염소로 저녁을 먹으리라. 꼬마 염소야, 내가 널 잡아먹겠다!")
• “Please! There’s hardly any meat on my bones!” said the little goat. “Soon my big brother will come this way, and he is much fatter and tastier than I am.” ("제발요! 제 뼈엔 살이 거의 없어요!" 작은 염소가 말했습니다. "곧 우리 형이 이 길로 올 거예요. 형은 나보다 훨씬 뚱뚱하고 맛있거든요.")
• “OK. You may pass.” And the first Billy Goat Gruff trotted across the bridge. ("좋아. 지나가도 좋다." 그리고 첫째 아기 염소 그러프는 다리를 건너 뛰어갔습니다.)
• Soon the second of the Billy Goats Gruff came. The troll clapped his hands together and squealed. (곧 둘째 아기 염소 그러프가 왔습니다. 트롤은 손뼉을 치며 비명을 질렀습니다.)
• “I would only spoil your appetite,” the second goat smiled. “Soon my big brother will come this way.” ("전 당신의 식욕만 망칠 뿐이에요," 둘째 염소가 미소 지었습니다. "곧 우리 형이 이 길로 올 거예요.")
• The troll was bursting with anticipation. “This third brother sounds positively mouthwatering!” (트롤은 기대감으로 가득 찼습니다. "이 셋째 형이라는 녀석은 정말 군침 돌게 들리는군!")
• Then came the third goat. “Wow. You’re really big,” said the troll. (그때 셋째 염소가 나타났습니다. "와. 너 정말 크구나," 트롤이 말했습니다.)
• The big goat lowered his horns and stamped his hoof. “No,” said the goat. “You will not.” (큰 염소는 뿔을 낮추고 발을 굴렀습니다. "아니," 염소가 말했습니다. "넌 날 잡아먹지 못해.")
• The third Billy Goat Gruff rammed into the troll, who flew off the bridge, into the rapids, and over the waterfall. (셋째 아기 염소 그러프가 트롤을 들이받았고, 트롤은 다리 밖으로 날아가 급류에 휩쓸려 폭포 너머로 떨어졌습니다.)
• The three Billy Goats Gruff are still there today, eating all they want, getting nice and fat. (아기 염소 삼형제는 오늘날까지 그곳에 살며, 먹고 싶은 만큼 먹으며 아주 통통해졌답니다.)
